The Tragically Hip In Boston: 9/21/2004 At Avalon.

That's a bit of a clunky article title I'll admit. But it's definitely search engine friendly, so cut me some slack. Tonight Janet, Bryan, Jennifer, Betsy, Bo, Mark and I went to see the Hip play in Boston. And it was amazing.

I've seen Downie solo twice, and this was the fourth time I've seen the Hip - honestly don't think the man has ever put on a better show. With me present. 3 encores, energy like nutty bananas. Great time. These Canadian cats have a lot of life left in them.

Dear Dave,

We were recently turned on to your web site by some weird little foreign guy. We all agree that we have found it to be very informative, funny and you seem to be well versed in the local social scene.

In your opinion, where are the top 5 Boston night spots (Fri & Sat) to meet new and interesting people. By people, we mean Men. Not boys in Budweiser T-shirts and baseball caps. Real honest to goodness, open the car door for you, help you on with your coat, too proud to let a lady pay for dinner... Men.

Are there such people and places or are we kidding ourselves?

Please advise.

Signed,
3 tragically hip non-feminist women bored with the Boston scene.

Dave, where did these bored women go when I was in Boston? I hope these girls, oops I'm sorry, should I say "women", find someone soon to kill their boredom.

If unlucky, and if they wish, they can come to Vegas to party. I dont know if I'll open the car door for them, but I sure can open the door of fun here in sincity.

Ladies,

I'm flattered that you'd ask me - but as anyone who knows me well can tell you, I shy away from the overly-trendy (which it sounds like you're seeking).

But you're right. I can help you out - you just aren't likely to see me at any of these places. Which you may count as a good thing as far as you're concerned. But everyone is good at something, and in addition to rug-hooking, I know Boston bars.

I'm going to give you a few ideas (Just 3 - cause I'se got work to do) which I hope meet your fancy. I tried to mix a 'degree of class' with 'somewhat down-to-earth' here.

1. West Street Grille. You know it's probably sigh-inducingly trendy if there's an 'e' on the end of 'grille' - but this ain't so bad. 3 floors, good music. I've had a lot of fun here. Search for it online to find the address. It's sorta in-between Chinatown and the Common.

2. The Living Room. Great bar aesthetically. Not too snobby. On the North End Waterfront across from Joe's American and The Sail Loft. Crowded with North End yuppies and their latest victims.

3. Lucky's. Loungy, comfortable and off of Congress St. just over the bridge from the Financial District. Semi-Sinatra-esque theme bar (a la 'The Good Life' on Kingston st. but better). My big complaint is that they let too many people in and don't schedule enough staff.

Runner-up: Vinalia in Downtown Crossing. It's just always empty when I go there.

Good luck to you. And I am curious to know who the small foreigner is. I know several. I'll be at one of the dive-bars or Irish pubs in the city where I drink free. Again, shocking that I'm still single.

Very impressed with the pick's dave - there is still life in you yet. Not just the usual Tiernan's or Sidebar. I have to say though - Silvertone's is better than Lucky's - just the last time I was in Lucky's it was completely dead - like how when you go into Vinalia it is dead. The Joshua Tree in Davis Square is pretty good as well as The Burren if you are looking for Sunday Bluegrass. Also The Enormous Room in Central Square.

Davis Square is way too far outside of the city. But I agree with you as far as Silvertone is concerned. Big oversight on my part. Great bar, and you ladies can add it to the list as #4. It's on Bromfield St. near the Park St. T stop. If you see a bartender there who resembles the lead singer of Midnight Oil, say hello for me. His name is Peter and he's a great guy.

You're welcome. It was a great show. I'd do that every night of the week if I could. They didn't play "The Darkest One" though, which bummed me out. And nobody seemed to care that I yelled "Freedom 35" a bunch of times. And where the HEEEYELL was "Nautical Disaster"?

Silvertone. Sidebar. And yes, once a month or so, Tiernans. I'm a simple creature of habit. I won't lie.
